Who it's for

It suits you if…

You fly into Marrakech and leave from Fez. It's the route people ask us for most on a first trip, and you never drive the same road twice.

  • First trip to Morocco
  • Carrying on to the imperial cities or flying out of Fez

Private or small group

You can book this route either way, on this same page.

Price by group size

Private

A vehicle and driver just for you: you choose the start time and the stops. The price per person drops the more of you there are.

€160 per person

Small group

A seat in a shared minibus with other travellers on the same itinerary. Daily departures; the price is the same even if you travel alone.

Before you book

Book your riad in Fez for the night of day three. Cars can't enter the medina, so we drop you at the nearest gate and help you get there. To see Fez el-Bali the next day, hire an official guide: it's a maze.

It costs a little more than the round trip from Marrakech because the car has to drive back from Fez. We have guides to Fez and Merzouga, and if you want to add days, message us.

Driving hours and overnight stops

On Standard, a comfortable hotel in the Dades and a simple desert camp; on Superior, a nicer hotel and a tent with a private bathroom.

≈ 7 h

Marrakech – Dades

You cross the High Atlas, visit the kasbah of Aït Ben Haddou and pass through Skoura and the Valley of Roses on the way to the Dades.

5–6 h

Dades – Merzouga

The Dades and Todra gorges, then on to Erg Chebbi. You set off by camel at sunset and sleep at the camp.

≈ 8 h

Merzouga – Fez

You head north through the Ziz Valley, Midelt and the cedar forests of Ifrane and Azrou, where with luck you'll see Barbary macaques.

With one more day

If you want more time in the desert, the 4-day version adds a full day in Merzouga.

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1: Marrakech – Aït Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate – Skoura – Dades Valley

We pick you up from your accommodation in Marrakech at around 7:00 and cross the High Atlas over the Tizi n'Tichka pass, stopping at viewpoints. The climb has a lot of bends. On the way down we reach Aït Ben Haddou, the most famous mud-brick ksar in the country, and walk through it to the top of the hill.

Afterwards we pass through Ouarzazate and the Skoura palm grove with its earthen kasbahs, and continue through the Valley of Roses, where Damask roses are grown for rose water and oils. In the late afternoon we reach the Dades Valley. Dinner and overnight at a hotel in the valley. About 7 hours on the road with stops.

  2. Day 2: Dades Valley – Todra Gorge – Merzouga: camel ride and camp

After breakfast we drive up the Dades Valley to the stretch of tight hairpins and then come back down towards Boumalne and Tinghir. There we enter the Todra Gorge, a narrow canyon with sheer walls, and take a walk beside the river.

In the afternoon we pass through Tinejdad, Erfoud with its fossil workshops, and Rissani to Merzouga. At the foot of Erg Chebbi you get on a camel: a little over an hour through the dunes as the sun sets. If you have never ridden before, you will feel it in your legs at the end. At the camp there is mint tea, dinner and Berber music. Night in a tent. About 5 or 6 hours of driving.

Desert camp in Erg ChebbiBreakfast and dinner

  3. Day 3: Merzouga – Ziz Valley – Midelt – Ifrane – Fez

We climb a dune to watch the sunrise and ride back to Merzouga by camel or 4x4. After breakfast we head north through Erfoud and Errachidia, where the Ziz Valley begins. The road follows its canyon, with viewpoints over the palm grove, as far as the Legionnaire's Tunnel.

We cross the Middle Atlas and stop for lunch in Midelt, surrounded by apple orchards. In the afternoon we pass through the cedar forests near Azrou, where Barbary macaques are often seen, and Ifrane with its steep roofs. You reach Fez in the early evening. About 8 hours on the road with stops, and in winter it can snow on this stretch.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do this route the other way, from Fez to Marrakech?

Yes, the reverse route exists: you leave Fez via Ifrane and the Ziz Valley, sleep in the desert and the Dades, and reach Marrakech via Aït Ben Haddou. The scenery and the price are the same. Choose the direction based on which city you fly into and out of Morocco.

Why does this trip cost a bit more than the loop from Marrakech?

Because it ends in Fez and the car and driver go back to Marrakech empty. That return journey is reflected in the price of the car, which is split between the travellers. It usually still works out well for you: in three days you see the desert and get from one imperial city to the other without paying for a train or domestic flight.

How long is the drive from Merzouga to Fez?

It is about 470 kilometres, roughly 8 hours with stops for photos in the Ziz Valley, lunch in Midelt and the cedars and macaques near Azrou. We normally reach Fez in the early evening, in time for dinner at your riad.
